Retirement homes are multi-resident units for people who have reached an age where they need some assistance with living, but are capable for basic care on their own. The majority of residence in the housing unit has a room of their own or a shared room, usually as a couple. Some residences allow for an apartment type unit for singles or couples.
Often, additional services are available to the people who live in the facility that could include meals, recreation, and some kind of health care. Some facilities offer hospice care for the elderly or disable. Depending on requirements, the costs fluctuate accordingly.
Many of these retirement homes can be paid for like rent on an apartment unit. In this case, the rent is paid monthly. There are also lease services available for people who are not yet old enough to enter long-term care. Some of these assisted living buildings are also purchased as condominiums that can be sold at a later date.
These senior buildings are different than nursing homes who offer full medical care to the tenants. There are also retirement villages available today for the elderly. These villages offer separate and independent houses for the seniors. Most of the time when couples are involved they are offered joint living accommodations. This makes it easier for the family to make visits.
Senior's housing has been on the increase for many years, as the population ages. Baby boomers are now the main people using these services. There has been a boom since 2005 with yearly increases at around 13.5%. In early 2009 those numbers reached an all time high and the youngest of the boomers have begun to look for spaces early.
One of the important factors when considering moving into one of these retirement facilities is to understand that every service required increases the price. Demands are extremely high at present, so often there are waiting lists that are long, so planning needs to be done early. There are an impressive number of these businesses catering to the aged.
Because of the demand, the market has increased dramatically as well. Today, everything from individual properties to full service health care accommodations make assisted living much easier. The amenities offered by the various businesses should be taken into account when shopping for your old age. In most cases, people must be a minimum of 55 years old to qualify for entering into the early retirement facilities and most long term programs would rather you be about 65 years old, as they require the same care, with a few exceptions.
Besides the yearly or monthly fee, many of these places also charge an annual maintenance fee to help keep the grounds and buildings in good order. Most complexes have a nurse or receptionist at the door as visitor's enter. Those visiting relatives in retirement homes will be required to wash their hands, as older people are easy made ill with colds and flu viruses. This ensures the entire population stays healthy without requiring additional medical care.
