A WORLD PEACE PLAN

1. Re-organisation Of The United Nations

International laws
International laws that help to maintain the rights and freedoms of all citizens worldwide and to prevent war should be enforced by the United Nations. Most country's have laws to ensure the rights of people are protected and the United Nations could equally enforce laws to ensure people don't have their rights infringed upon because of where they live.

If 25-50% of all U.N. member's militaries were controlled by the U.N., they could work as an international police force to arrest any terrorists or corrupt world leaders.

This international police force/ military, could also come to the protection of any country that is attacked. This would deter many world leaders from initially going to war with another country.

The Power Of Veto

Although international law would work well in theory, in practice, the fact that some countries have the power of veto and may favor good relations with some countries over others, will always cause problems when it comes to votes within the U.N. However, every country should be able to govern as they wish, as long as nobody is hurt from it. Therefore perhaps the voting system would be better if the power of veto was only acceptable if the policy or action being voted on, affects that country directly.

U.N. Departments

The U.N. could be organized to have the following departments to ensure people's basic rights are adhered to and wars can be prevented:

International Criminal Court - this was created in 2002 and any international criminals can be brought here by the international police force/ military.

Humanitarian Dept - this could work with countries to help alleviate poverty and can call on the military in times of natural disaster.

Religious Council - if a member of all religions were to sit on this council, it would ensure the rights of all religions and spiritual communities are adhered to.

Defense Dept - this could control and call on the international military if any country is threatened by another.

Internal Affairs Dept - this dept can help any two countries or communities to come to an agreement instead of going to war.

Environmental Dept - this can work to ensure all human beings have access to clean food, air and water.

Action: write to you U.N. Ambassador and MP requesting a re-organisation of the U.N. to ensure all people are free and war can be better prevented.

2. National Laws

National laws that ensure minimum wage, lessons on empathy and sentences for acts of religious or racial hatred would all further help to ensure people can live free from violence and poverty.

Action: Write to your MP; if enough people do this it will make a difference once we all have a country where people can choose how they are governed.

3. Religious Teachings

Religions are morally influential and can teach people to be more peaceful and tolerant of all religions. They can also condemn anyone who tries to enforce their religion on anyone else.

Action: Write to your place of worship and ask them to promote the Akron Area Interfaith Council Position On Hatred and Violence. A copy of this is available on the following website: www.achieveworldpeace.co.uk on the ‘Religious Tolerance' page.

4. Lessons on Empathy

Understanding equality and diversity should be a part of the curriculum as well as conflict management and how to live as a peaceful, fair citizen with empathy for all living things.

Action: Write to your MP and ministers of education asking them to promote such teachings.

5. Adopting a Vegan Diet

Much of our vegetation and grain is used to feed livestock. This is an inefficient use of these resources as the protein from them is used to maintain inedible parts of the livestock such as horns and hooves etc. 40 million tonnes of grain would end world hunger and 540 million tonnes are fed to livestock in the West.

‘35 per cent of the world's people can be fed on a meat-based diet. A plant diet could feed everyone - then plus some.' Sir Crispin Tickell.
