If you know anything about affiliate marketing you will no doubt have come across the alarmingly high statistics of failure in the industry. However, let us not allow this to make us feel gloomy. Instead, we need to use this information to work out what successful affiliate marketing entrepreneurs do and don't do so we can join them.

Here are five of the mistakes many people make in affiliate marketing, and how to avoid them:

1. Targeting the wrong market. Amazingly, many people miss this point. It is no good trying to sell something to people who do not want to buy.

When you are just starting, you need to be sure that you are selling a product in a market where people are already spending money. Many of the most popular markets never reach saturation. Some examples of these are health, wealth, weight loss, sports and travel.

When you are looking for an affiliate program to join, choose one within these niches, and make sure it is something you are interested in yourself.

2. Lack of Focus. So many newbie affiliate marketers think that the quickest and easiest way to make money is to join as many programs as possible and sell lots of products. In fact, too many products on a website are actually off-putting, and the marketer will find themselves overwhelmed by trying to do too much.

It is far better to focus on just one product to start with and only add more when you start to make a profit with it.

3. Setting up too many websites. For similar reasons to point 2, this can also lead to failure. It is better to have one site up and running, and actually making a profit before adding another. Eventually, you can have as many websites as you want, as long as you are able to manage them, but for the beginner it is essential that you focus all your energies on one.

4. Not Being Different. So many affiliate marketers use the websites provided by the merchant without ever changing them or setting up their own. The websites these merchants provide are fine to get you started, but you do need to separate yourself from the competition by creating a different, personalized website.

In a competitive market it is absolutely essential that your site does not look the same as everyone else's. People quickly get bored by seeing the same old site; they will only buy from individual, real human beings who they can trust.

It is worth investing a little money in this, otherwise you will never rise above the competition. Learn Search Engine optimization to make sure that the search engines will be able to find your site. This does mean learning a bit of website technology, but it will be worth it.

5. Not Building a List. Many new affiliate marketers just do not understand the importance of this. Instead of relying on spontaneous visits to your site, you need to be able to capture email addresses and create a following so you have a pool of receptive people to sell to.

Once you have built up a large list, it can be an asset for you for years to come. Give them something of value for free for many months and build their trust before you expect them to buy from you.

If you have ever heard of or read about someone who has failed in affiliate marketing, you can be pretty sure they have made some or all of the above mistakes. This is not the fault of the affiliate marketing company, but the lack of understanding in the marketer. Successful affiliate marketing relies on avoiding these traps and doing the work needed to ensure your business grows year by year.
