Much has been said about the importance of establishing a positive online presence. Often times, this involves the negating of a negative online presence. Depending on how long it takes for you to arrive on the scene, this can be a small matter or a large one. Many people may think that once you build your positive profile, that's all there is to it. In all actuality, your work has just begun.

You see, once you get your positive online presence, you have to keep it. Your competition isn't going to give up on discrediting you. You may still have the occasional dissatisfied customer or employee. You absolutely must stay on the ball.

The first thing you have to do is monitor your online presence. You have to keep an eye on the good and the bad reviews. This can be done by a variety of social media monitoring tools.

Now that you see what's out there, you have to address everything. Naturally, you will have to protect your online presence from the negative reviews. Depending on what they are, you will have to address them or quash them.

What of the positive reviews? Some people wouldn't think to do anything with those, but addressing these as well is a great way to protect your positive online presence. Remember, if there's anything good being said about you, promote it!

First of all, you can acknowledge the positive review. You can send the reviewer a personal email acknowledging their review, and let them know how much you value their opinion of your online presence. Let them know that you appreciate their support; it can be worth your while.

Secondly, encourage them to share what they're saying about you. The more the positive words spread about you, the better it is for your online presence. Many people have personal blogs with long friend lists, so it's good viral marketing.

You will also want to reward the people who are helping you keep your positive online presence. This can be done in many ways. It can be something as personal as having a cup of coffee together, or it can be a special discount for them. It's ultimately up to you and how personal you want to get.

It's all about building relationships. The more friendly you are with people, the more positive your online presence will become. If you can turn around negative reviews and magnify the positive ones, it can only get better from here.

You know that you have a really good online presence when you start creating "brand evangelists." When people start singing your praises of their own accord, you'll find that the sum total of your positive profile far outweighs the negative marks you may get.

Naturally, your work still isn't done in maintaining your positive online presence. It never will. However, if you work hard at it in the beginning, it will become progressively easier, at least in the sense of obscuring the negative reviews. It then becomes more of a matter of keeping your supporters happy.
