There are a number of groups of people who need, like the rest of us, to book hotels for their holidays, and yet have conditions or disabilities which can easily be overlooked or ignored, and in some cases, not even be recognized as existing, but which can cause challenges and problems for both the individual and the hotel staff.

One of the most common is that of deafness. People who are either partially or entirely deaf don't, of course, usually show any outward sign that this is obvious, and so can frequently be ignored or forgotten. Yet deafness does bring with it a number of challenges which need to be addressed by the staff at the hotel to ensure that a good level of service can be provided, and also that the occupants themselves are safe.

It is important in the first instance to make sure that if you are booking a holiday, either for yourself or for someone else who happens to be deaf, that this is mentioned and made quite clear to the hotel before a reservation is made. It would be advisable to make sure that you obtain information from the hotel on facilities or services that might be available to help people with this particular condition. For example, text phones or loop systems installed within the building.

If there is a fire or other emergency it will be necessary for the hotel staff to be aware of any individual who is hard of hearing or entirely deaf, as an alarm which is audible or a knock on the door won't provide them with the same warning and time to react as it will those people who are able to hear fully. Therefore, special arrangements will need to be put into place should an emergency situation arise.

If a text phone service is available it is not always the case that the member of staff on reception will be aware of who is calling, who needs to use this facility, and who isn't. Therefore if you find yourself in need of calling reception for some reason, it might be the case that you will need to pick up the handset and immediately explain that you are deaf and will not be able to hear them, and therefore can they either use the text service on the phone, or send someone up to deal with whatever it is you require in person.

There are few, if any hotels, which would not be glad to be able to provide a level of service which can be adapted to suit these sorts of needs, but the responsibility is clearly on the individual to ensure that the hotel is fully aware of their requirements. There are websites available on the internet which are specifically aimed at those who are hard of hearing, and which offers a service which identifies hotels that can provide a particularly excellent level of service for such people. Similarly, social groups and friends will also be able to offer advice based on their experience.
