The Dragon Boat Festival---What Kind of Zong Zi is Popular in this year
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. It is a very important festival in China. People often hold Dragon Boat race, eat Zong Zi(a kind of glutinous rice dumpling), drink Realgar wine and so on to celebrate this festival. Though the celebration ceremony varies in different areas, eating Zong Zi is necessary for every family.
This year, China will host the Olympic game and the Dragon Boat Festival is designated as national statutory festival the first time. Meanwhile, the College Entrance Examination will take place in the Dragon Boat Festival. All these three factors make a large demand for Zong Zi. The manufactures all take new action to meet the large market demand.

“Torch” Zong Zi
Considering it is the Olympic year, some manufactures make their Zong Zi torch-shaped and name it “torch Zong Zi” to attractive the consumers. Some others make the packed box torch-shaped and advertise with words “Eat torch-shaped Zong Zi in the Olympic year” on the box. There are four Zong Zi which weighted 240g in each torch-shaped box. Two torch-shaped boxes tied together with eight Zong Zi in total cost 88 Yuan. That is to say, each Zong Zi costs 11 Yuan. In fact, the stuffing for these Zong Zi is chestnut, yolk, pork, sweetened bean paste which is traditional and simple.

The Dragon Boat Festival this year, on 8th June, is the second day of the College Entrance Examination. There is a popular saying among the parents: Eating Zong Zi can make you succeed in the exam. So Zong Zi is named “ Zhuangyuan Zong” by some people. The families which have examinee become the main consumers of Zong Zi and show their best wishes for their children.
In fact, parents know that it’s absurd to achieve success by eating Zong Zi. But they all expect their children can win in the exam. By doing this, they may feel comfortable. Therefore, many manufactures cater to this side to produce their product. It reported that the “Zhuang Yuan Zong” marked with “ Da Sanyuan”which are produced by Da Sanyuan restaurant in Beijing will come into the market.
For the price of the producing material such as glutinous rice, pork, oil keeping increasing, the cost of delivery and salary of the workers increasing at the same time, the price of Zong Zi this year rises 20% compared with last year. To reducing the affection of the increasing cost, the manufacturers adopt some new ways to give the consumers a seemed reasonable reason for rising price, which including producing new products, changing package and specifications and so on. Although the price of Zong Zi rises sharply, it doesn’t influent much to the sales.
We advice the public should keep rational on buying the “torch-shaped” Zong Zi or the “zhuang yuan”Zong Zi.
