Vehicle remote start units seem to be a luxury item. Just the very idea of being able to start your automobile before setting foot out of your home can seem like quite an extravagance. However, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to be able to warm up your car in the snowy, icy weather and get it all defrosted before you have to get in. It doesn't have to put a huge dent in your wallet to cool off your minivan before you and your kids go out and get in for an afternoon ride on one of the hottest days of the summer. Purchasing and installing a vehicle remote start unit isn't an unaffordable indulgence, only attainable by people who are rich.

In fact, vehicle remote start units are much more affordable than most people think. Good systems can be purchased starting at around $200, with installation costing an additional $100 to $180.

It is possible for people to install remote start units themselves; however, most mechanics do not recommend doing this because too often problems can crop up that may be difficult to fix. If problems do come up, people end up heading to a mechanic to fix them anyway; therefore, it is best to just go ahead and pay to have a professional install the vehicle remote start unit from the start. After all, someone who isn't experienced could end up causing some type of problem that could cost more to fix than the original cost of the system installation would be.

There are many different types and brands of vehicle remote start units available on the market. It is wise to opt for one that has a lifetime warranty on parts and labor. Here are a few other characteristics of remote start systems to look for:

-Find a system that will show you that it is engaged and on, perhaps by flashing the lights.

-Make sure the unit has some type of temperature sensor that can turn the unit off if the engine overheats.

-Choose a remote start system that operates at a range of at least 400 feet.

-Look for a safety feature that will keep the unit from starting the vehicle if it is not in "park".

You will want to make sure that the mechanic you choose to install your remote start unit is experienced as an installer.

Check to see if he has been certified by the Mobile Electronics Certification Program. Ask him how long he has been installing vehicle remote start systems and what his experience is with the particular unit you have purchased.

After the installation, have the mechanic go over the entire system with you so that you can make certain you understand each part of it, and so that you feel comfortable that the mechanic was thorough in his installation. Read through the owner's manual so that you will know exactly how to operate your new remote start unit and then enjoy your new indulgent toy!
