Ah, winter! Shoveling snow 'til your back aches, runny noses, and depressing weather. Holed up in your own house? Imagine trading your boots and mitts for shorts and suntan lotion, heading to tropical beaches and being out on a boat fishing in sun kissed waters with not a care in the world. Suddenly, your rod bends nearly in half and the battle is on. If this sounds exciting to you, a Costa Rica fishing vacation could be something for you!
Surely, fishing in your little lake is fun because you get to be all dressed up in your heavy parka, long underwear, scarf, mittens, and two pair of socks. Then, you have the pleasure of enjoying the cold north wind until your lips are so cold you sound like you have novacaine. All in pursuit of crappies or sunnies nearly as cold as you. Of, you can break out of your winter routine and travel to Costa Rica where the only ice you will see will be in your glass. Think about it. What sounds better: Costa Rica fishing or a frozen butt?
On the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica, two of the favorite fishing centers are Tamarindo and Flamingo, both of which are along its famous Gold Coast. Sailfish are available here year round but the best fishing is May through August. Want to try your hand at tuna fishing? Fish these waters from August to October. You can often find large schools of tuna from 40 to 400 pounds. If roosterfish appeal to you, visit Papagayo Bay around November to March, staying near the coastline. Depending on the time of year, you also have a chance to hook wahoo, marlin, or the shimmering dorado. And, for a terrific experience, rent an ocean kayak.
Billfish are a popular quarry for Costa Rica fishermen and ladies and the Central Pacific coast offers them in abundance. Visit the waters off Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina from December to April for sails or marlin. Between May though October many folks catch a vibrant dorado while trolling offshore. Tuna, wahoo, snapper, roosters, and snook are also common in this region and are found closer in. You will not be disappointed fishing here!
For many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found along the southern Pacific Coast near the incomparable Osa Peninsula down to Panama. In the months when the water is warm, big marlin and sailfish are frequent visitors. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is claimed by charter operators to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. Hook a barracuda, grouper, or delicious sea bass here as well as other inland species. Sometimes, you will have hundreds of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.
On the Atlantic coast, you will find the world-famous Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado fishing waters up to the Nicaragua border. The seas here can be very choppy but when the waters are flat, this is a deep sea angler's dream spot! From/Between May to November, the valuable tarpon fish is bountiful here, and they can grow up to two hundred. If you are very lucky, you might hook. This is also a great place for really big. Jack Crevalle, guapote, giant grouper, and tripletail can also be caught here. And, be sure to visit the world famous green sea turtle nesting beaches at Tortuguero.
Costa Rica fishing is justly world famous with its dozens of fishing world records. With two seas from which to choose there are a staggering amount of fish species. For a great experience, Costa Rica charters can be found online and through travel agencies. Wherever you are you will find many outfitters if you decide to go on the spur-of-the-moment. So, get out of your cubicle, get away from your computer, and head to the tropical sun. See you here! |
