No parent likes that his child should misbehave or acts selfish. Every parent dreads this when they face the inevitable outburst from a toddler or the scornful look of their teen, we tend to visualize the worst case scenario. If you're serious about effective parenting, though, you'll want to look into character education.
When to Start
Character education in fact must be started when kids are small, as it's much simpler to educate a kid to respect folks around him than it is to change a teenager into a more reliable, caring person. That's not to say it's impossible, however and the phrase "better late than never" really does apply to this. Thus, even if your child is already half-grown, you can certainly begin working together on becoming a better person.
Effective Parenting Techniques
There is no better way to teach your children to be great people of character than to provide a good example in your own actions. This isn't a religious matter, though it can be, but basically a matter of training your kids to behave and to think about others instead of focus on themselves most of the time. It's a tough job and no parent is perfect, so there are chances that you might be wrong most of the time.
When you do mess up, you must admit that you aren't perfect and make sure your child understands that you don't anticipate them to be perfect either, merely to do their finest to feel about everybody. Character education is more than just teaching your children good manners and behavior, it is teaching your child to accept it when they do a mistake and try to correct it.
Talking with your kids is also an excellent method to give them more of a perspective on the humanity around them. You can explain a lot to them and give them possible ways to avoid violence and discuss how to react when someone else is in trouble, hurting or causing them pain. Interaction is vital from an early age.
Starting in Character Education
Talking to your kids and explaining them what's right and what's not, its better to teach them in play and learn method. Character education doesn't have to be dull, boring and forced. In fact, there are games available that can turn it into something your children will love to learn.
When you change this into something that is a great amount of excitement, you'll find that your kids turn out to be better behaved and start thinking more about other people. They actually relate the games to real life and apply those rules. But, you need to back this up with interaction, particularly in teens.
Many adolescents have a rough time adjusting and if you are starting at a late date with character education, you are going to find it tough. But, effective parenting can begin at any age, therefore you'll have to be persistent. Kids at this age really pick up quickly on insincerity and lying, so you need to model the behavior you want . There's no point in telling your kids to be tolerant, when you yourself become irate at having to wait for the dentist or when you are trying to get a parking place. You should try and be what you kids want to see you as, and also remember to say sorry if you are wrong somewhere.
Successful parenting isn't always easy. It may be a tough situation where you have to work quite hard particularly in areas where you want your child to expertise in. You can learn together and talk about how to deal with different circumstances. Kids love to know that their parents understand how they feel, so be sure to share your own experiences as part of character education and you'll not only improve communication but learn yourself .
