The eyes are your windows to the world. Without their proper functioning, your experience of this life will be severely limited, and its limitation will in result, have far reaching consequences in most other aspects of life. What most people do not realize is that a majority portion of eye problems are treatable. Many, at the on set of eye disease, give in to it, ignoring it completely till its affect accumulates and worsens with time, rendering it nearly impossible to address.

If you are having difficulty with your eyesight, do not despair. Ophthalmologists are eye specialists that are experts in the surgical and medical care of the eyes and all visual pathways. In addition, they specialize in the treatment and prevention of eye injuries and surgery. They are either Dos (doctors of osteopathy) or MDs (doctors of medicine).

And Ophthalmologists follows a long, arduous path in becoming an eye specialist. It begins with a four year stint of undergraduate education focusing on pre medicine, another four years of intensive medical school education, a year of practical internship, and at least three years of fellowship focusing on surgical and medical training in the care of the eye. Then, he or she is eligible to take the state licensing exam, conducted by a formal state regulatory body which makes it permissible for the Ophthalmologist to diagnose, manage and treat all problems affecting the eye and related visual pathways.

In other words, a licensed Ophthalmologist is a physician and a surgeon of the eyes. If you are looking to find the best Ophthalmologist for your eye care, you need to make sure you look into all aspects of the matter thoroughly before making a decision. The eyes are a delicate matter, and require only the best in care. One minor issue can cause you permanent damage, or even the loss of sight forever.

Before selecting an Ophthalmologist, make sure he or she has undertaken the required years of pre medical, medical and post medical education. In addition, you want to choose one who is board certified, implying that he or she is equipped to provide you all possible and accurate surgical and medical care for the health of your eyes. Once you have short listed a few, you can ask some basic questions, such as:

·Are you certified by the board?

·What are your qualifications, references, if any?

·How many years of experience do you have?

·What is a list of services that you provide your patients?

·Is there a way I can inquire about your past and current patients and what they may have to say about you?

·What type of eye surgeries do you perform and how long have you been involved in performing them?

·What is the success rate of your treatments in providing your patients 20/20 vision?

·If I am to be your patient, who will provide me pre and post operative care in case of a surgery?

·Has the FDA regulated your laser equipment?

In addition to these queries, it may be a sensible idea to inquire from the doctors previous and existing patients privately and find out about any malpractice claims. In addition, it would be wise to dig up any information on whether or not the particular doctors license has ever been restricted, suspended or revoked.

At the end of the day, the choice of an Ophthalmologist is a private matter. You will have to select someone who makes you feel comfortable, and in whose hands you are at ease. Do not be in an excessive rush to make your choice. Take your time and choose the best option for your eyes.
