There are many wedding albums which are filled with the standard formal portraits. While often beautiful, these photos do not tend to say anything about who the bride and groom are, what they enjoy, or what makes them special. These are some great ideas on how to get wedding photos which reflect your life together.
One of the best ways to capture something special about the bride and groom in photos is to take them away from the reception site. So your first step is to find a photographer with an open mind and who has a creative mind and an artistic mind. The next step is to think about what is special in your lives, either as individuals or as a couple. It could be hobbies, a favorite place, a profession, a love of animals, or anything else that in fifty years from now will tell the story of your life at the time of your wedding.
If the bride and groom have a shared love for a place, that would be a natural destination for the wedding photo shoot. It could be a very specific place, such as a lake, or a mountaintop, or it could be a broader category like a city. The special place need not be formal or classically beautiful, either. If you spend every Saturday morning sipping coffee at your favorite cafe down the street, why not take a few photos there in your wedding attire and bridal jewelry? Think about how much fun you will have reminiscing over those pictures in years to come. Or if you fell in love in San Francisco, take some wedding portraits on one of the iconic streetcars. By capturing an image of the background of your love, it will help to tell the story of your romance.
Some of the most wonderful wedding photos are the most offbeat. I recently saw some pictures from a wedding in which the groom was a firefighter by profession. The entire wedding party posed for photos in front of a shiny red firetruck. Best of all, there were pictures of the bride, in her white gown and elegant bridal jewelry, riding in the front of the truck. It was a fantastic metaphor for the way in which she was now a part of her husband s life. Not only that, they were just great looking pictures.
Many couples have a shared love of animals. If your wedding venue will not permit your pets to attend your event, have a friend bring them by for a few quick pictures outside. How sweet would it be for the bride and groom to pose for snapshots with a pair of Boston Terriers or with a big cat curled up on the groom s lap? Even a larger four legged friend could get in on the action – imagine how grand it would be to have photos of the bride perched sidesaddle on her horse, for example. Just bring a lint roller for quick touch ups before returning to the reception!
If you can think of it, a good photographer can capture the special place or idea. Whether you are quirky, romantic, or creative, your story can be told in images. Having wedding photos which are not only beautiful, but which are expressive and personal will truly make your wedding album a cherished memento. |
