If windshield repair or a windshield replacement in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont is what you need, you may be looking for a little advice and direction. Good advice from auto glass professionals isn't tough to find, but faulty advice from non-professionals isn't either.

For example, one participant of an online forum asked what she could do to stop her windshield crack from spreading. Some of the inadequate answers she got included: self-repairs with clear plastic and special, cancer-causing glue, and with Crazy Glue, Super Glue, adhesives, liquid porcelain, clear nail polish, or windshield repair kits; drilling the end of the crack in the glass; etching around cracks with a glass cutter or diamond; tinting the windshield; covering the crack with packaging, cello, or duct tape; avoiding potholes or bumps; avoiding winter defrosting; avoiding summer sunlight and heat; replacing with a recycled windshield; stop using the car; and getting a motorcycle helmet and baseball bat so as to turn the car into a windshield-free stock car. The functional answers included getting the crack professionally repaired for minimal cost or for free via auto insurance.

It's crucial to stop windshield cracks from spreading because if they aren't dealt with in time, they will eventually necessitate windshield replacements. Some jurisdictions in the U.S. prohibit driving with windshield cracks that are in excess of six inches from any one edge of the windshield. Even if a person doesn't have insurance to cover the cost of a fix, it's so much smarter to pay $10 or $20 out-of-pocket than to pay hundreds for a new windshield. When a crack is smaller than the size of a dollar bill, it's usually fixable. It doesn't make sense for a person to spend even a dollar on a potentially destructive or ineffective self-fix when insurance-paid fixes and $10 professional repairs are available.

Do-it-yourself replacement windshields are not a good idea because they are often improperly installed and they can pop out during accidents instead of doing the jobs they're supposed to. Besides keeping weather, rocks, wind, and bugs out of the vehicle, windshields are designed as safety devices to keep the roof from buckling in a rollover accident, keep people inside the car, and keep the airbags inside for protection. Windshields that are installed by completely trained certified technicians using only OEM-specification glass and adhesives are the only ones you can trust with your safety. This is why it's also not wise to use junkyard windshields for replacement. You can't know what you're getting.

Some Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine auto glass providers give G-12 warrantees on their windshield installations, meaning that if your new windshield breaks or gets damaged by normal road hazards within one year of the replacement, they will fix or replace it. They also guarantee rear window and windshield installations for as long as the owner has the vehicle. Check out the very best New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont windshield dealers.
