The county of Cumbria has so much to offer its visitors, boasting mountains, lakes, valleys, historic buildings, preserved railways, a rich heritage and a wealth of towns and villages to explore.

This area also has a great range of self catering accommodation, providing an ideal base to enjoy your holiday in this lovely county. It’s a superb location for a holiday property rental and a fun filled family vacation.

Cumbria, which is situated in the north west of England, is England’s second largest county and includes the beautiful and scenic Lake District National Park. It became a national park in 1951.

Not surprisingly, the Lake District National Park is a very popular tourist attraction. It covers an area of 885 square miles and includes Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England (at 978 metres), and Lake Windermere, which is England’s largest natural lake (at 10.5 miles long).

The Lake District is a haven for walkers, cyclists and those who are keen on watersports. Whether you just want to take a gentle stroll or prefer to go hill walking, it’s available here. There are numerous cycling opportunities, too, so you can hire a bike and make the most of the great outdoors in Cumbria! If you enjoy watersports, you can go windsurfing rowing, sailing, kayaking or fishing in this area. There are some places where you can hire a boat, too, so you can also admire the scenery from the water.

Cumbria offers a wealth of other attractions, as well as the stunning Lake District National Park.

If you enjoy visiting historic houses, Cumbria has many interesting buildings and heritage sites to explore. For example, you can go to Wordsworth s House in Cockermouth, Hutton in the Forest in Penrith, Muncaster Castle in Ravenglass and Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal – plus more besides.

If you just want to go exploring some great places in Cumbria, then you will be spoilt for choice. You could head to Barrow in Furness, Brough, Bowness on Windermere, Ulverston, Brampton, Coniston, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Keswick or Windermere.

While you’re in Cumbria, try to visit the city of Carlisle, which is rich in history and has a cathedral and a castle among other visitor attractions, including the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, sports and leisure facilities as well as shops, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. You can even take a trip to races, at Carlisle Racecourse. And while you’re in the area, why not take a walk along a part of the famous Hadrian’s Wall!

Another great way of catching some of the scenery here is by taking a trip on the Settle Carlisle Railway, which travels along some truly beautiful landscapes along the way.

During your stay in Cumbria, you will no doubt want to dine out in one of the many restaurants and sample some of the delicious food available in this area. While you’re on holiday, why not try some local specialities, such as Cumberland Sausage or even Kendal Mint Cake.

Cumbria is an ideal UK holiday destination for all the family. It has something for everyone, with beautiful landscapes to discover, a wealth of visitor attractions and plenty of activities to keep you busy for the duration of your vacation.
