You need a web server to put your web site on the Internet. Usually, owning and maintaining a web server can cost money and it requires someone who knows what they are doing to maintain the server and the web-site.
A web host can do this for you. They provide equipment and other technical programs that are required to build a new web-site. These hosting companies charge a monthly fee for the service of storing your web site and allowing your web site to be seen on the Internet. If you wish to customize your site, you will also need a web page editor, and I would recommend PsPad (also free) which installs on your computer and can be used in tandem with Filezilla.
Web hosting is offered in multiple formats based on cost and infrastructure, with Linux hosting being the best option for small to large businesses. With Windows hosting, you tend to get less for more money as the host has to spend additional monies for licensing, which is passed on to you.
