However, some of these entities may require or encourage you to get an MBE certification if you want to get on their radar as a small business. The primary reason for considering an MBE certification is to increase your chances of getting the government or these large corporations as clients.<br /> <br /> So what is the point of obtaining MBE certifications? The federal government does not have projects that are "required" to be set-aside just for minority owned businesses. But as a practical matter, the federal government does make significant efforts to award a certain percentage of contracts to minority companies. So there are still incredible advantages with the federal government and large corporations if you are a MBE.<br /> <br /> If your business offers goods or services that you would like to sell to government agencies in your state, then a state MBE certification is definitely worth considering.<br /> <br /> One very effective strategy for growing your business can be to obtain a MBE certification in more than one state. Despite popular belief to the contrary, you can in fact obtain certifications in many different states. This would allow you to compete on projects from state government agencies in each state in which you are certified, with the special advantages that your MBE status gives you.<br /> <br /> It certainly will take more effort to obtain MBE certifications in different states. Unfortunately, every state has a separate MBE certification process and paperwork. Dont spend your time obtaining a certification unless you have identified one or more state government agencies that you are targeting in a particular state.<br /> <br /> In addition, a very effective strategy to consider is to obtain state MBE certifications to aid in selling to state government(s), to use a federal MBE certification to aid in selling to the federal government, and to use a national MBE certification to aid in selling to large corporations. If your business sells a product or service that any or all of these entities would buy, then you may benefit from obtaining these multiple levels of MBE certification.<br /> <br /> But before you obtain any certification, you should first consider who you would like to have as a customer, and determine whether one of those certifications will help you obtain that customer. If, upon analysis, none of the certifications will help you'reach your ideal customer, then don't waste your effort.<br /> <br /> MBE certifications can drastically improve your chances of gaining business from those cash cow clients.
