His top five Aussie flicks are well worth a look-see.<br /> <br /> Tim <br /> <br /> Mel Gibson won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1979 for his portrayal of a developmentally delayed labourer who does odd jobs for an older woman, played by Piper Laurie. The two form a bond of understanding which grows into a romance, with a few complications along the way. Gibson's acting is spot-on and his character conveys an engaging innocence. Veteran actress Piper Laurie comes across as a believable love interest, despite the age disparity. <br /> <br /> Gallipoli<br /> <br /> Gibson won his second AFI award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1981 for this World War II era epic. Gibson's character, Frank Dunne, joins the Army with a former track rival, Archy, and after training in Egypt they are sent to fight in Gallipoli, a peninsula on the coast of Turkey. Here the two are separated, Frank tapped for courier duty because of his running ability, and Archy, even though he has beaten Frank in races, is sent to the trenches to fight. Only one of the two young soldiers survives. Gibson's youthful vitality and charismatic good looks win the day in this critically acclaimed flick.<br /> <br /> Mad Max II<br /> <br /> This second entry in the three-part Mad Max series of films is known in the US as "The Road Warrior." Call it what you will, this is the crown jewel of the three, with Gibson delivering a brilliant performance as the reluctant hero, out-gunning and outwitting a violent outlaw gang of futuristic thugs. Max (Mel Gibson) offers to help a group of upstanding citizens escape the torment of the hugger-muggers and in the process finds personal redemption. What's not to love about this movie? Oh, and be sure to watch the bouncing boomerang for some added fun.<br /> <br /> The Year of Living Dangerously<br /> <br /> In this great antipodeans drama, Gibson plays a convincing rookie reporter, Guy Hamilton, who is assigned to take over the Jakarta beat during an internal coup attempt and a general atmosphere of espionage and intrigue. Sigourney Weaver plays the love interest. This film provides a great platform for Gibson's burgeoning acting skills.<br /> <br /> The Bounty<br /> <br /> In this 1984 remake of the Marlon Brando classic, Mel Gibson is cast in the role of Fletcher Christian, ship's mate and soon-to-be-leader of the mutiny against Captain Bligh, played ably by Anthony Hopkins. The film features an all-star cast including Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson, and Sir Lawrence Olivier as Admiral Hood.
