Situated at 932 meters above sea level the city of Curitiba is perched on a plateau. The city can be found 105 kilometres west of the Paranaguá Sea Port. This sea port is served by the Afonso Pena International Airport. The city of Curitiba was first founded by the Portuguese who gave it the name “Vila da Nossa Senhora da Lus dos Pinhais” which in English means “Village of Our Lady of the Light of the Pines”. In 1721 the name of the village was changed to Curitiba and in 1812 the village became a town.<br /> <br /> At this point an alternative name spelling for the town came up as Coritiba. For a while this spelling was the main one which was used in state documents and in the press. However in 1919 a state decree ended the name dispute and the city was officially called Curitiba. Today you will see a city which is modern in its outlook and services. There are plenty of places to visit, sights to see and activities for the visitor to take part in.<br /> <br /> Among the numerous places that you can visit while you are in Curitiba is that of the Italian Woods. Here you will find an area which provides such treats which would be needed for parties which are firm favourites of the Italian community. Here you will find food stalls, drink stalls, an open space where shows and folklore presentations can take place. There is also a polenta pot to be found in this part of the city. Some party spots you will find here in the Italian Woods of Curitiba are the Wine Party, the Grape Party and the 4 Giorni in Italy.<br /> <br /> Once you have looked and enjoyed yourself in the Italian Woods you may want to relax in the Botanic Gardens. Here you will find a national garden which has been created along the lines of a French garden. At the entrance to the garden itself you will be captivated by the stunning flower carpet which welcomes visitors to the garden. The greenhouse found in the garden is a metallic structure which is filled with many native botanical species of Brazil.<br /> <br /> There is plenty of hiking trails and paths for visitors to this botanical garden in Curitiba. The botanic museum which is housed in the garden attracts numerous researchers from around the world. In the museum you will find there is room for exhibitions, a theatre and a library as well. Once you have finished visiting this museum you may want to visit Japan Square. <br /> <br /> Here in this square which was built to pay homage to the Japanese immigrants who settled in Curitiba to practice agriculture, you will find 30 cherry trees which were sent from Japan itself. In addition to these trees you can see an artificial lake, a Tea House, the Japanese Portal and the Culture House. These last three structures to the Japan Square were built here in 1993.<br /> <br /> Once you have finished these sights you will find there are many other interesting places which are waiting for you to discover them. To see these and many natural wonders you should come to Curitiba yourself. From here spend some time enjoying the beauties and pleasures which abound in Brazil.
