The counselor places an empty chair in a room and you're instructed to visualize that your deceased loved one is really occupying that chair. There are some grievers who are not ready, or not yet comfortable dealing with their loss around a lot of people. In this case, they can always turn to their counselor, psychologist, or even their pastor whom they can individually talk to.
