Kentucky Lake Fishing: Camp, Fish, Hike And More For Fantastic Family Fun! - By: Reinhold Garry

Kentucky is the home to two of the biggest lakes in the US and where there is water, you will find water sports. One of the favorite of these sports is Kentucky lake fishing, but surrounded by a 170 000 acre recreation area, there is a lot more going on, of this you can be guaranteed.

The Kentucky lakes National recreation area offers a ton of fun filled activities that will satisfy the outdoorsman in everyone. As well as hiking, fishing and camping there are water park adventures, go-karting, wild life spotting, boating, tubing, skiing, and lots more activities.

There are nine reservoirs on the Tennessee River and Kentucky Lake is the lowest of these. It was formed when the Kentucky dam was completed in 1944 and backs up the river to about the equivalent of 155,339 football fields in water acreage; that is about 184 miles. The second of these two great lakes is Lake Barkley and this was build in the 1950's by the US Army Engineers Corps. The lakes are connected by a navigable canal.

Fishing and many other sports take place all through the year, winter included, but in the winter, the favorite sport is bird watching. Eagles can be spotted as well as many other migratory birds and it is a favorite spot for the more red blooded hunters, who can bag both duck and geese.

Late in the winter anglers start fishing for crappie and this season lasts well into May. These fish move around but find there way back to the shallows by April which is when Black Bass season starts. Black Bass trophy fishing is a remarkably popular activity and sees anglers getting some fantastic top water and off the embankment fishing during late summer.

For less strenuous fishing pursuits, panfish are a popular catch and bluegill is one of the favorites. Kentucky lake fishing also allows the angler to stretch their line with redear; this is one of the popular shell cracker fish. Many guides in this area will be able to take you out to fishing hot spots.

Tournaments such as the Bassmaster Elite Series, the FLW Series, the Stren Series and the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League take place at Kentucky Lakes, and the massive population of bass makes tournament fishing a lot of fun.

Because these lakes are the home to some of the best US crappie fishing, both the Crappie Masters and the Crappie USA tournament, visit the lakes. Kentucky lake is also home to fish on a larger scale and we find flathead, channel and blue catfish, white, yellow, black and striped bass and sauger.

The Kentucky Lakes are however more than just recreational areas and they are used to manufacture TVA hydroelectricity as well as control flooding on the Ohio and Mississippi and rivers.

Seventeen million visitors flock to Kentucky Lakes annually, so they are the home to hundreds of docks, boating and fishing clubs and 2 400 miles of shoreline. This makes for and area of great natural beauty; there are 92 commercial recreation areas, state parks, county parks, municipal parks, national parks, wildlife refuges and management areas, group camps, and privately managed recreation areas.
